About Me
I have been working with metal in one way or another for over 40 years. First, as a student, mostly making jewelry, then as an employee of Fox Products Corp., where I worked for 23 years making the metal parts for the contrabassoons. During this time I learned a lot about the behavior of metal, and making tools and jigs, and that with persistence almost any problem can be solved. My metal art that I show on this website dates from 2002 to the present. My art is all about three-dimensional shapes, aesthetically pleasing forms found in nature. I use the visual memories of a lifetime of observing nature to create the designs for my artwork. The pieces I make are fully three-dimensional, hammered into shape from flat sheet. My favorite material is brass, because it is the most malleable of metals, but I also use copper, bronze, and silver. I stay away from elaborate surface decoration and patinas, preferring to keep things simple, so as not to distract from the form of the piece. I refuse to take myself too seriously, and much of my work has a playful or humorous tone. The themes of my work are timeless and universal, rather than topical; I like to think that my work could be appreciated by anyone anywhere, now or hundreds of years from now. I live in rural Northeastern Indiana with my wife, Bobbie. We have four grown children. My studio is located on 20 acres of former worn-out farmland, most of which is being allowed to return to a natural state, my own little nature preserve. I like to take breaks from my work and just wander the grounds, observing the wildlife, sometimes taking pictures.
