Making a Dog Urn: some of the steps in the process of converting a flat piece of metal into a three-dimensional sculpture
- The finished urn, on pillow.
- 1. Starting with an 8.5" disc of 16 gauge annealed brass.
- 2. Crease hammered in all the way around, using the guidelines.
- 3. All four stages of raising shown here. It was annealed after each stage.
- 4. Creating a flange at the bottom.
- 5. The result of the work shown in the previous image.
- 6. Using the hydraulic press to push out the ears.
- 7. Showing the result of the previous step.
- 7. Having also pushe out the nose in the same way as the ears, and hammered in where the eyes will be.
- 9. Using the tool shown on the left, hammering the ears to stretch the metal upward.
- 10. After annealing, another tool is used with the hydraulic press to extend the ears further.
- 11. The result or the last step.
- 12. More hammering, on the front of the ears, using the same tool trhat was used with the press.
- 13. Hammering the backs of the ears, same tool.
- 14. Now switching to forming the nose and muzzle, using the special tool shown on the left.
